Neurophysiology

The area of physiology known as "neurophysiology" is concerned with how the nervous system works. i.e., the investigation of the capabilities of neurons, glia, and networks.

  • Historically, electrophysiology—the electrical recording of neural activity at all scales, from the molecular (the electroencephalogram, or EEG) to the cellular—has dominated this field (intracellular recording of the properties of single neurons).
  • It is hard to distinguish between electrical events and the biochemical and molecular processes that cause them because the neuron is an electrochemical machine.
  • To research how the brain works, neurophysiologists now employ methods from chemistry (calcium imaging), physics (functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI), and molecular biology (site-directed mutations).
